The City of Columbus is pleased to announce it was recently awarded a Transportation Alternative  Program (TAP) grant to construct bicycle and pedistrian trails from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) .   The city was awared up to $403,468 of federal funds to complete the project.  This project is one of 28 projects that were approved for TAP funds during this cycle. 

“We are excited that Columbus was awarded a TAP grant to build trails in our community”, said Mayor Michael Thom. Thom added, “The project will  enhance quality of life, improve safety, and help achieve the long term vision for Columbus”.

The project wil make connections between exsisitng facilities to create an interconnected network allowing bicycles and pedestrians to safely reach points of interest throughout the city.  The project will help implement the Safe Routes to School Plan by providing off street trails that will provide a safe connection to to the elementary school. 

The project entails over 8,600 linear feet of trail that generally runs from Firemans Park through Kiwanis Park to downtown.  Another trail segment will run from Tower Drive and provide connections to the elementary school and Park Avenue. 

The total cost for the project is estimated at $509,000 and is scheduled to begin in 2023 with design engineering and plan development likely starting in 2021.
