[ARCHIVED] What's Up with the Clock Tower?

They say even a broken clock is right twice a day, but the City Hall clock tower’s eastern face proves them wrong because it has no hands.

Public Works removed the arms to allow for repairs of a worn gear. Without removing the arms, the gear could not be fixed. The broken gear in question was original to the 125-year-old mechanism and several teeth wore away over its long life.

The clock tower is a beloved symbol of the community, and the City is committed to restoring it to working order. However, replacing rare parts in the mechanism is difficult and may take some time.

All of the other faces are unaffected by the broken gear and should continue to work as normal.

For further clock tower questions, or to report problems with the other clock faces, please call Columbus Public Works — 623-5908.
