Overview
The Columbus Public Works Department consists of 12 dedicated employees whose only mission is to provide safe and effective service to the citizens of Columbus at the most efficient cost.

Under the direction of the Committee of the Whole, the day to day operations of the department is managed by City Administrator Boyd Kraemer.

The Street Division, which is responsible for all infrastructure maintenance and improvement has 6 employees assigned to its ranks but is often augmented by other staff as the need arises.

The City Parks and Park facilities are maintained by 1 permanently assigned staff member and this number is increased during the summer months through the use of full-time temporary seasonal staff.

Hillside Cemetery is owned by the City of Columbus and is operated by the Hillside Cemetery Board of Directors with maintenance and repair responsibilities being delegated to department employees.

CITY OF COLUMBUS
PUBLIC NOTICE
WALKERS WELCOME AT THE PAVILION

Get ready to kick up your heels! The Pavilion floor resurface is complete.

The pavilion was built in 1917 at an approximate cost of $15,000. The hardwood tongue and groove maple floor is the original floor from that period. Good Maintenance and community pride have left the City with an enviable architectural legacy. The Public Works Dept has just finished resurfacing the floor and it looks GREAT!
Click
here and here for some pictures.

Join the healthy Columbus residents who use the pavilion for walking every day 7:15AM to 3:15PM, Monday through Friday (through April 1st), or sign up for one of the exercise classes held in the evening. Walkers please change street shoes to walking shoes. Contact our Recreation Department for details.

A call to Diggers Hotline is MANDATORY!!

Residents should be aware that any time a construction project requires digging, a call to
Digger's Hotline is REQUIRED

We recently had an incident in the city that could have been disastrous. A resident was doing some sidewalk construction, and staked out the forms to hold the cement. Unfortunately, an underground gas pipe was "compromised" as shown

.

Fortunately, the situation was resolved without catastrophe, but could have easily put Columbus on the Evening News in a less than optimal fashion (can you say "Towering Inferno"??). And there could have been significant liability issues as well.
So if your project involves any kind of digging, call the Digger's Hotline FIRST.

Bulletin on Clear Bags for Trash

As of April 15, 2010 Badger Disposal implemented the clear bag ordinance for all household trash per current contract. Recycling should also be in clear bags or loose in containers. Please place on the opposite side of drive than your garbage. If any questions about this please call Public Works at 920-623-5908.

Single Stream Recycling

Beginning on January 1, 2010, The City of Columbus switched to a single stream recycling program. This means all recyclables should be co-mingled into one container. City of Columbus residents will no longer need to separate plastic, aluminum, glass, cardboard, or paper. The container should be either a recyclable clear bag or a container of 35 gallons or less. Badger Disposal will be picking up the co-mingled recyclables on the same day as garbage is picked up. Please remember that recyclable waste cannot be mixed with regular garbage.

If you have any questions, please call Badger Disposal at (920)623-4766 or the Department of Public Works at (920)623-5908.
