Parks
The
City of Columbus has an extensive park system with Fireman's Park being
the largest. The city's park system has been designed to allow for both
organized as well as passive recreational activities. The following is
a list of parks and their amenities.
FIREMAN'S
PARK:
Located
on Park Avenue in the western quadrant of the city this park is the
largest park within the city's system. The Park is blessed with such
historic structures as the Fireman's Park Pavilion, the Scout Cabin and
the Rest Haven. The parks open and inviting tree lined green space is a
popular home to passive recreational activities such as walking and
bicycling. This facility also hosts the largest of athletic fields
within the system which hosts a number of events among them high school
and semi-pro baseball, adult recreational softball and both high school
and recreational football.
Each
spring, Fireman's Park is proud to be the host of the Columbus Carriage
Classic, an equestrian event with national representation. This event
has grown steadily over the past few years and has proven to be both
enjoyable and educational to children and adults alike.
The
park is also the longtime host to the areas largest 4 th of July event.
The event is a weeklong celebration that includes a carnival, nightly
entertainment and a delightful array of vendors in the food court. The
celebration is highlighted with a parade which ends in the park and is
arguably the largest in the region.
Fireman's
Park is home to the Deer Pen where these animals can be viewed in
natural habitat, The Columbus Area Aquatic Center, Tennis Courts and
Playground Equipment as well as walking paths and picnic shelters.
WASHINGTON PARK :
Located
on Ludington Street at Fuller this park offers a delightful respite
from everyday stresses. The abundant shade trees invite visitors to sit
and relax and listen to the birds and the children playing on the
playground equipment.
MEISTER
PARK :
Located
on the North side of the city at the intersection of Ludington and
Middleton Streets this park is host to organized recreational
activities such as baseball, soccer and adult recreation on its fields.
The Lions Club of Columbus also operates a popular refreshment stand
within the park. Installed in 2001, this park also has the latest
improvements in playground equipment thanks to a generous donation from
the Columbus Lions Club.
ROTARY
PARK :
Located
across Ludington Street from Meister Park , Rotary Park offers many
water activities such as canoeing, fishing and ice-skating at this
park, as this facility fronts the Crawfish River Mill Pond. While not
officially within the corporate limits of the city thanks to the
generosity of the Columbus Rotary Club which underwrites maintenance
costs, this park is an absolute treasure to residents to utilize and
enjoy.
KIWANIS
PARK :
Located
in the 200 block of East School Street this park is used mainly for
baseball and softball activities organized through the city's
Recreation Department it also hosts high school and special athletic
events. Many improvements to this park have been made through the funds
generously donated by the Columbus Kiwanis Club who also operates a
well-stocked refreshment stand that adds to the enjoyment of visitors
to this facility.
AVALON PARK
PARK :
One
of our newer parks is located at 611 Avalon Road between State Highway 89 and
State Highway 73. This park was developed in memory of Michelle Vick with the joint
effort from the City of Columbus and donanted funds. The park is divided by a stream
with volleyball and basketball courts on one side and a shelter with restrooms for golfers
and playground equipment for children on the other side. Avalon Park is a wonderful place
to host any of your group outings.
